"The more we love God, the more holy do we become." St. Francis Borgia
If you want to be holy, the sure path is that of love: love of God and love of others. Love is measured not in quantity but in quality. Love is a gift from God, who has loved us first and beyond measure. Love's focus is other. It is expressed in small ways, like a genuine smile when we meet another, like an act of unconditional service, like a kind word, like opening a door for another. If done in love because of our relationship with God, then we will be growing in holiness. That was the small way St. Therese of the Child Jesus discovered and her path of holiness. The path to holiness lies before us. We need but take it.
"Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love." St. Therese of the Child Jesus
So often we think that sacrifice have to be painful and hard, like fasting or mortification. What is a sacrifice? It is offering to God in praise of his name, in gratitude for his many blessings. Many times we avoid making difficult sacrifices. But St. Therese saw that something done in love for another is a sacrifice pleasing to God. With that in mind we need to become aware of the small opportunities we are given by God to make a sacrifice pleasing to him. "What you did for the least, you did for me." Whatever we do, if we do it in love, our gift is acceptable to God.
