Thought of the Day May 27, 2022 Water: symbol of the Holy Spirit

By 10:55 AM

Jesus refers to the Spirit as the fountain from which living water flows. On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and exclaimed, “Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as scripture says, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from within him.’” He said this in reference to the Spirit that those who came to believe in him were to receive. There was, of course, no Spirit yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified." (Jn 7:37-39)  As water cleanses, as water refreshes dry land, as water quenches our thirst, as water renews the life of a plant, so the Holy Spirit is given to us to cleanse, refresh, renew and fulfill the life we received in Baptism.

Here is a reflection of Pope Francis on this theme. "Man is like a traveler who, crossing the deserts of life, has a thirst for living water, gushing and fresh, capable of quenching his deep desire for light, love, beauty and peace... The living water that is the Holy Spirit quenches our lives because it tells us that we are loved by God as His children, that we can love God as his children, and that by his grace we can live as children of God, as did Jesus." Invite the Holy Spirit to cleanse, refresh, renew and transform you today so that you can live more freely and fully in the life God shares with you, so that you can truly be fully alive in God.
