Thought of the Day August 23, 2023 Live in the present moment with gratitude

“Is there any affliction now endured by mankind that was not endured by our fathers before us? What sufferings of ours even bear comparison with what we know of their sufferings? And yet you hear people complaining about this present day and age because things were so much better in former times. I wonder what would happen if they could be taken back to the days of their ancestors—would we not still hear them complaining? You may think past ages were good, but it is only because you are not living in them.” (St. Augustine)

It is sad to know that things haven't changed. The Chosen People complained against God and Moses for their life in the desert in comparison to their life in Egypt. They failed to realized that it was the hardness of their hearts that extended their desert journey. Each era, each generation has its problems because of not following the Lord's commands. Generations after us will look upon our times as good times in comparison to theirs. Its the nature of the beast. Instead of complaining and yearning for the "glories" of the past, we need to the see the plan of God for us in this present moment and act on his plan if we want to move from our desert into the "promised land".
