Our true destiny is Love, who is God.  We sometimes seek love from others to fulfill us, only to learn they can't. That's not their role. Only when we love others in and because of Christ can we begin to experience fulfillment. The key is not the other, but Christ. When God commands us to love one another, it is not to leave God out but to love the other because of God, who is love. Merton also said that "no man is an island." We need each other, but more importantly, we need God. Love without God is "eros" or at best "philos". Love with God is "agape."
