Thought of the Day October 11. 2023 To receive what is best, not what is desired

By 10:03 AM

"I asked God for strength that I might achieve glory, I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey. I asked God for health that I might do better things, I was given infirmity that I might do better things. I asked for riches that I might be happy, I was given poverty that I might be wise. I asked for power that I might have the praise of men, I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God. I asked for all things that I might enjoy life, I was given life that I might enjoy all things. I got nothing that I asked for but everything that I have hope for. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered. I am among all men most richly blessed.”

At the moment we wonder why God did not answer our prayer. In that moment God blessed us in the way that will draw us closer to him. He is like a parent who doesn't give the child what it wants but what is truly best for the child. What loving parent would give the child a loaded gun instead of a toy pistol?  A loaded gun in the  hands of an inexperienced child could be destructive. At the moment the child may throw a tantrum fit, which he will get over in time. As the parent did what was best for the child, not what the child wanted, so God does what is best for us in the long run. If God does not love us, he would not care. But the fact is he does love us and wants the best for us.
