The Devil attempted to dissuade Jesus from embracing the Cross. It would have been easy for Jesus to avoid death by crucifixion, but that was not the Father's will.  As much as humanly Jesus dreaded the cross, he chose the will of the Father out of love for us. In turn, Jesus said that anyone who wished to be his disciple and enter into eternal life must also embrace the crosses of life. The Devil tempts us with comfort, but this only leads us away from the eternal life God has promised us. Like Jesus we may dread our crosses, but like Jesus we must choose to endure the crosses for the greater life God has for us. The grace of God is there to strengthen us as it was there for Jesus. Fix your eyes on the Lord, not on the cross.
