This is in line with Jesus' teaching: "Treat others as you would have them treat you." If we treat someone badly who has treated us that way, all we have done is perpetuate the evil in the world. We have not changed anything. Darkness responded to with darkness. But if we treat that person, as you would want to be treated, which is with kindness, understanding and love, then we bring the light of God into the darkness of sin. Light dispels darkness; darkness enhances darkness. We might not change the other, but we do not allow the other to change us into his likeness.
