It is pride that leads us away from God. We want things our way, no matter the effects on others. That is the root of sin of Adam and Eve and the root of all our sins. In making it possible for us to be reconciled with God, Jesus, though he was God and Man, chose to humble himself to embrace the will of the Father, even to  death by crucifixion. We are not asked to undergo the same fate. But we are called to imitate his humility by choosing the Father's will for us. What is this will of God? To turn away from sin and unite our will with his, so that we may not only be reconciled but share eternal life. Humility is the road to holiness.
