Thought of the Day February 9, 2022 Live in the present moment

"One of the essential conditions of interior freedom is the ability to live in the present moment. For one thing, it is only then that we can exercise freedom. We have no hold on the past—we can’t change the smallest bit of it. People sometimes try to relive past events considered failures (“I should have done this . . . I should have said that . . .”) but those imaginary scenarios are merely dreams: it is not possible to backtrack. The only free act we can make in regard to the past is to accept it just as it was and leave it trustingly in God’s hands." (Fr. Jacques Philippe)

For us human beings, living in the present moment is usually a difficult task to accomplish. Like the proverbial pendulum we go from the past to the future, finding it very hard to stay in the present moment. Any yet there is no life or value in living in the failures of the past or in the uncertainties of the future. The grace of God is found in the present moment. For in the present moment we can seek to live differently from the past. In the present moment we can prepare to enter into the future. It is like walking. If we keep looking to what is behind us or look too far ahead of us, we will stumble and fall, failing to see the step in the present moment. Jesus addressed this need to remain in the present moment. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34)
