Thought of the Day April 22, 2020 Holy Spirit

By 11:34 AM

As we move towards the Solemnity of Pentecost, the Church  begins to focus our attention on the Holy Spirit. From Advent till Easter the focus has been on the Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. He was sent to redeem us and reconcile us to the Father. Now, the Church looks at the role of the Holy Spirit, whom the Father and Jesus sent to sanctify, empower and mission us.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus told Nicodemus that one must be born of water and the Spirit, if he wishes to enter the Kingdom of God. We received the Holy Spirit when we were baptized. By God's grace we shared in the very life of God and became Temples of the Holy Spirit.  He is the one who sanctifies us and transforms us. When we were confirmed, we received a fresh outpouring of the gifts of the Spirit empowering us as witnesses of Jesus Christ.

What should our response be? Openness and docility. As Jesus said, like the wind, the Spirit goes where he wills. We can seek, ask and invite the Spirit to come in a fresh new way into our lives, so that we can grow in holiness and witness about Jesus to others. Come, Holy Spirit, come!
