Thought of the Day April 23, 2020 God does not ration the gift of the Spirit

By 10:23 AM

What do we know about the Holy Spirit? Besides being the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, we know that he has a role in our eternal salvation. He conceived the Word of God in the womb of Mary. He filled Jesus for his mission, including the Passion. John reflects the teaching of Jesus when he says: "For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God. He does not ration his gift of the Spirit" (John 3:34). Luke uses the phrase "filled with the Holy Spirit".

If God desires to fill us with his Holy Spirit and does not ration his gift, what do we need to do to receive a fresh infilling of the Spirit?  How empty are we and how large a vessel do we provide? If we knew someone was giving gold coins away to whoever desires them, as much as they wanted, would we bring a cup, a bowl, a barrel or a cavern?

As we prepare to celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost, God is inviting us to receive a fresh infilling of his Spirit as we continue our journey of salvation.  What is our desire? How much do we want? Begin even now praying from the depth of your heart: "Come, Holy Spirit, come"!
