Thought of the Day April 24, 2020 Pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit

By 10:30 AM

What did Jesus teach us about the Holy Spirit? In the first two chapters of Luke, we hear about seven people filled with the Holy Spirit in this order: John the Baptist, Mary, Jesus, Elizabeth, Zacharia, Simeon and Anna. We find many in the Acts of the Apostles who are said to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Jesus speaks about this plan of God when he told the Apostles before he ascended "In a few days you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit." This happened ten days later. On the Day of Pentecost, while at prayer, they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. They experienced the same infilling of the Spirit as Jesus had after his baptism in the Jordan, while in prayer.

That this was not to be limited only to them and to that time. For  Peter proclaimed to the people on Pentecost: "You will receive the gift of the holy Spirit. For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call.” Jesus gave us what we must do to receive the Holy Spirit in a fresh new way. "If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

As we prepare for Pentecost anew, if we wish to receive a fresh indwelling and outpouring of the Holy Spirit, we can begin now to pray daily this prayer: "Come, Holy Spirit, come."
