Thought of the Day April 27, 2020 Holy Spirit, our Advocate

By 10:16 AM

One of the titles of the Holy Spirit used by Jesus is Advocate or Paraclete. What is an Advocate? He is one who pleads our case before a judge. In 1 John 2:1 we read that Jesus is our Advocate before the Father. Through his death and resurrection Jesus offered the sacrifice that reconciled us back to God. But in John 14:16 Jesus says: "I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always." As our Advocate the Holy Spirit helps us, as he helped Jesus in his humanity, to resist the temptation of the Evil One. We have been set free by Jesus, we are given the grace by the Holy Spirit to remain free.

As our Advocate, the Spirit is the Spirit of truth and thus he counsels us in the truth. Recall the words of Jesus. "When they take you before synagogues and before rulers and authorities, do not worry about how or what your defense will be or about what you are to say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say" (Luke 12:12).

Do we call upon the Holy Spirit, our Advocate, at the time of temptation?  Do we invoke the Spirit of God when we are called to defend our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ? We are not left on our on but are given the Spirit to be with us on our journey. Come, Holy Spirit, come!
