One of the Gifts of the Spirit that is misunderstood and avoided is the Gift of Tongues. The purpose of this gift is two-fold, personal edification and a  prophetic word for others. We are limited in our vocabulary in regards to praising and thanking God. The Gift of Tongues enables us praise God without limitation to our human vocabulary. It is the prayer of a child that trusts in the love of the parent, even when it can only utter child's babble. The heart of the parent knows the heart of the child. So God knows our heart as we praise him in our own language and in tongues. St. Paul talks about this in Romans 8:26-27. St. Paul himself desired that all would pray in tongues as he did.  What may sound foolish is the way that God invites us to a deeper relationship with him. Humble yourself before the Lord as a child and be a fool for Christ.
