Some people seek shortcuts to holiness. The only short cut is the right way. Having been given all they needed and more, Adam and Eve were not satisfied. All they had to do was to follow the will of God, clearly set before them. They were one with God. They wanted to be equal to God. So in sinning, they lost they union with God. Doing the will of God does not take away what is best for us, but enables us to embrace it even in a fuller way. Holiness involves uniting our will to God and not his will to us. In doing this we are using our will to its full purpose, choosing that which is ultimate good for us. It is a mystery, but it is the only sure way to holiness.
