Most people are unaware of the love of God within them, namely the presence of the Holy Spirit. As one tends to the fire that it may not go out, lest the damp and cold overtake them, so we need to tend to that living spark within us that we do not experience the cold darkness of sin. As much as we are to show love to others in fulfilling the command of God, we must not neglect to show show for God and ourselves. The right and holy love of self  is based on the awareness of God's love for us. We learn to love what God loves. In doing so, we are loving and praising God. The false self-love focuses on self and not God within us.
